The plan doesn't pay providers. You pay the discounted rate at each visit.

Check your dentist first

Discounts only apply at participating dentists, and the list can change. Search for yours before you join.

Paying yearly is cheaper

Monthly billing adds a $30 setup fee. For one member on Dental Access or Care 500 Series, it costs $58.40 more in year one.

Not every charge is discounted

The home page promises "No Waiting Periods or Exclusions", but the terms say the plan doesn't discount all procedures. For Care 500 Series, 1Dental lists lab and OSHA fees, at-home aligners and work already in progress.

Care 500 gives specialists 20%

Its fee list is for general dentists. Oral surgeons, orthodontists and other specialists give a flat 20% off their usual rates.

It renews automatically

To stop it, cancel by phone, email or letter. After 30 days, only residents of Florida, North Dakota and Oklahoma get prorated refunds, plus a few special cases.

Vision waits for the card

Dental savings start the day you join, but eye care providers need the physical card that comes by mail.

Read headline numbers carefully

"Reported Average Savings of 50%" appears without a source, and the Aetna network count of 226,000 locations dates from September 2017.

Asked before joining

Is 1Dental dental insurance?

No. It's a discount membership. You pay participating dentists a reduced fee at each visit, with no claims to file, no deductibles and no annual maximums.

How soon can I use it?

1Dental says you can use your plan at the dentist the day you join. Vision savings start once your physical card arrives by mail.

Which plan should I choose?

1Dental labels Care 500 Series best for general dentists and Dental Access best for specialists. The Preferred Plan combines both, which 1Dental says gives you the highest savings and more dentists to choose from.

Can I keep my own dentist?

Only if they participate in your plan's network, so search for them before you join. If your dentist later leaves the network, 1Dental can help you find another or switch plans.

Can I save on work I already need?

Yes. Pre-existing conditions are included from day one. On Care 500 Series, treatment that's already under way, such as braces already fitted, isn't discounted.

How do I cancel?

Call 855-329-6305, email customercare@1dental.com or write to 1Dental, with your name and member ID. Within 30 days you get a refund, minus any setup fee. After that, your plan stays active until the end of the period you've paid for.

Will the price go up?

1Dental says it doesn't charge renewal fees or raise your plan's price after the first year. It also offers multi-year plans.

Who runs the plans, and where are they available?

1Dental sells the plans, and Careington International Corporation administers them. They're available in every state except Vermont and Washington. You must be 18 or over to join, and parents can join for a child.
