I bought this chair because I had to have a large abdominal hernia repaired. From experience, I know the period after abdominal surgery makes almost everything painful, especially trying to lie down in bed and (gasp) trying to get up from the bed. Moreover, even with a tight abdominal binder, each attempt to get up while straining the abdomen increases the chance the surgery would eventually fail – you can feel your muscles popping and tearing. Thankfully, the chair arrived the day before surgery. I set the chair up and tested it to make sure it worked. It took about an hour (half of which was dealing with the cardboard box 😊)
When I got back from surgery, I was still surprised at how painful any movement was. In fact, the first three days were awful. But the chair’s ability to bring me nearly upright so I could get my feet under me without using the abdomen was phenomenally helpful. I could get up, go to the bathroom, and come back without two people helping me and without any pain. The chair lays back as far as I can take it, and I used the chair as my bed for just over a week before returning to my regular bed.
Frankly, I’ve lost count of how many times I thanked God for this chair. My surgeon, who hadn’t thought of using such a chair, thought it was a great idea. After this experience putting the chair to the test, I consider its cost $100 worth it and more.
